Funclusion: Karachi's Pioneering Space for Inclusive Play and Recreation for Children of All Abilities

Karachi is about to witness a heartwarming shift in how recreational spaces cater to children of all abilities. Funclusion, a pioneering initiative, has officially opened its doors, offering a sensory-friendly and inclusive environment where neurodivergent individuals can explore, play, and truly be themselves.
Founded by Dr. Maheen Noorani, a special education consultant and mother to two boys on the autism spectrum, Funclusion is a labor of love born from both professional expertise and personal experience. After spending five years in the US, earning her Master’s in Special Education from Columbia University and a Doctorate in Education, Dr. Noorani returned to Karachi only to find a lack of recreational options suited to her children’s needs. She longed for a space where they could engage in play without feeling overwhelmed, where their unique ways of interacting with the world would be embraced rather than challenged. It was this very gap that led to the creation of Funclusion—a space that isn’t just designed for neurodivergent children, but one that celebrates them.
Stepping into Funclusion feels different from any traditional recreational center. The space is thoughtfully curated to provide a sense of comfort and predictability, ensuring that children can engage at their own pace without the fear of sensory overload. From quiet zones that allow moments of calm to a variety of sensory-rich activities tailored to different preferences, every detail has been crafted with inclusion at its heart. Unlike crowded play areas that can be overwhelming, Funclusion maintains limited entry slots to ensure that children have ample personal space, allowing them to interact in a way that feels natural to them. The staff is trained to provide guidance and support, ensuring that both children and their families feel safe and understood. For parents, Funclusion also serves as a community hub, offering valuable resources to help them navigate their child’s needs with greater confidence.
The prelaunch event saw an outpouring of support from notable guests who recognized the significance of this initiative. Sindh Chief Minister Mr. Murad Ali Shah, accompanied by his wife, graced the occasion, alongside Mr. Farman Ali Tanwari, Regional Director of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and secretary of DEPD Mr Tuaha Faruqui. Well-known figures from the entertainment industry, including musician and actor Junaid Khan and Dr. Fahad Mirza, also lent their support, further amplifying the importance of Funclusion’s mission.
But Funclusion is more than just a play space—it is a movement. It stands as a testament to the idea that every child, regardless of ability, deserves a space where they feel understood, valued, and free to be themselves. With plans to expand across Pakistan, Funclusion is setting a new standard for inclusive recreation, ensuring that neurodivergent individuals of all ages have access to spaces where they can thrive.
For families who have long searched for a place that truly embraces their children’s needs, Funclusion is an invitation to experience something different—a place where joy is accessible to all. Dr. Noorani and her team welcome everyone to be part of this journey toward greater inclusion, proving that small steps in the right direction can lead to meaningful change.
