You would never second guess yourself if you walked into a store, smelled a fragrance and purchased it upon liking it. But, there’s a lot more that you need to know about fragrances than just their smell. There are variations in intensities, different layering of notes, and of course, there’s a way to help the scent last longer on your skin. In light of these, Colish, known for creating fragranced products ranging from scented candles to room sprays, wants you to learn everything there is about perfumes

Intensity:

First and foremost, prior to purchasing a perfume, you need to be able to identify the different types and intensities. There are five main types of perfumes, namely Parfum, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Cologne and Eau Fraiche.

Parfum, usually the most expensive out of the above, contains the highest concentration of fragrance between 20-30%. This means that it usually lasts the longest from six to eight hours.

Eau de Parfum is the second-highest in concentration. The fragrance concentration falls between 15-20% and the scent will last anywhere from four to six hours. Though Colish perfumes fall into this category, their concentration is on the higher side at 22% with a scent that lasts up to 8 hours!

Eau de Toilette has a lower fragrance concentration between 5-15%, and subsequently, the other two types have even lower concentrations. These last just a couple of hours on the skin and are typically cheaper to purchase.

Notes:

While purchasing perfumes, you may have come across their descriptions where they mention top notes, heart/middle notes, and base notes.

Top notes are those that you smell instantly upon spraying. This scent is also the one that dissipates the quickest. Next, the middle/heart notes are the most noticeable part of the perfume. This scent manifests as the top notes start to fade. Finally, the base note, also known as the dry down note is the richest scent that appears.

For reference, Colish’s Oud Night Out fragrance notes are:

Top Notes: Pear, Strawberry, Raspberry, Bergamot
Heart Notes: Cyclamen , Saffron, Jasmine
Base Notes:  Cedarwood, Patchouli, Gaiacwood, Nagarmotha, Tonka, Ambergris, White Musk

Making Your Perfume Last Longer:

There are plenty of hacks you can use to make your perfume last a little longer, but here are some of the most effective ones we recommend.

The first thing you want to do is make sure you purchase the correct intensity of perfume to know how long it should be lasting. Next, apply it to your pulse points i.e. wrists, neck, and inner elbow area. Then, you need to make sure you’re spraying it directly on your skin rather than your clothes; clothes can not only get stained, but the heat from your skin will help the perfume stay longer. Finally, ensure your skin is moisturized before applying. Use an unscented moisturizer to help lock in the scent.
