Madonna Praises Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy's Upcoming Documentary on Qandeel Baloch
International pop star Madonna shared an Instagram post extending support to Sharmeen Obaid for her upcoming documentary on the internet sensation titled, Qandeel Baloch: A Very Short Story.
“Proud to narrate my friend Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s latest film about Qandeel Baloch, the Pakistani social media star, who was murdered by her brother in an ‘honor killing,'” the post read.
Madonna praised the Pakistani government for closing a loophole that had long been broken by offenders in the country who were allowed to walk free after murdering a loved one in the name of 'honour'.
“The Pakistan government finally just passed the anti-honour killing bill, closing the loophole that allowed killers to walk free,” she said. “So good to see positive change happen in the world.”
The icon also expressed grief over Qandeel's untimely death, saying, “too bad Qandeel and so many others had to die first.”
Qandeel, who was murdered by her brother earlier this year in 'honour killing' is remembered and applauded for her bravery. The documentary also sheds light on Pakistan's struggle to pass the anti-honour killings and rape bill.
At the 2016 Global Citizen festival Sharmeen announced,
“All of us need to honor the women who have been killed, whose names we do not know, by calling on all governments to punish all killers of women. The world that we want to leave our girls and our daughters must be much safer than the world we have inherited”
