Cheaper alternatives may be lying around in our kitchen but there is no guarantee that they are good for us! Have a look to see what you should avoid:
Egg Face Mask
That commonly prescribed ‘beauty hack’ that uses egg whites to tighten the skin or to remove blackheads — you have to be careful since a raw egg can be contaminated with salmonella. By placing an uncooked egg so close to your mouth, you run the risk of contracting a gastrointestinal tract infection. Best to avoid.
Lemon As Brightener
The makeup gurus favourite is lemon to brighten up the skin, but do you know that many dermatologists have strictly asked to not use lemons on skin as they have a pH of about 2, which can really mess up the skin's natural pH of 4 - 5. This can lead to discolouration and sensitivity to the sun. Avoid using this very popular ingredient on your skin.
Mayonnaise Face Mask
This face mask is made of oil and fat which can clog your pores and let bacteria grow which can lead to acne and breaking out. Totally not worth it.
Baking Soda Exfoliator
Using an exfoliator is considered a luxury which is why many people head towards at-home alternatives to scrub off dead skin. Baking soda is a very popular ingredient used for this purpose, but what you need to know is that it also has a higher pH level and your skin can react to it, making you feel itchy and giving you a rash.
Toothpaste on Pimples
This one is very common and recommended by so many YouTubers/ bloggers to shrink or quickly dry out a pimple. The truth is when you get a pimple, you’re desperate for quick fixes like these especially if you have some event coming up. It causes irritation and can even leave you with marks and discolouration. Don’t end up getting acne scarring just for that quick fix.
You must do your own research before trying anything on your face and not just believe what your favourite YouTuber or blogger is telling you. Tell us which of these ingredients you are guilty of using?
