Though, some might disagree as the fruit drink is know for its high sugar content, but latest research suggests otherwise. Cherry juice is known to beat insomnia and increase sleep time.
The unlikely concoction was first consume by professional athletes ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics to reduce recovery time between events. And now, two studies have proved that cherry juice also has the ability to help with sleep-related issues.
Healthspan Elite's performance nutritionist, Nigel Mitchell said he includes the drink "as an important part of the recovery protocol with all professional sports teams" that he works with.
He further added, "Many athletes find that cherry juice also supports sleep when taken an hour before bedtime."
According to Louisiana State University, after two weeks of drinking cherry juice, people suffering from insomnia gained about 83 additional minutes of sleep a night.
Cherries are covered with tryptophan that breaks down into melatonin in the body, the hormone that is responsible for evoking feelings of drowsiness.
Another research by Northumbria University showed, drinking two glasses of cherry juice a day could also increase sleep efficiency i.e. a global measure of sleep quality. The study proved, participants who consumed cherry juice twice a day for a week enjoyed about 25 minutes of additional sleep, as well as increase of up to six percent in sleep efficiency.
That said, cherries won't knock you out like any other strong drink, they work by first stabilising sleep patterns by regulating the balance of chemicals in the body that make a person feel either drowsy or alert.
