Welcome to our cover feature, Fouzia! With a prolific career in modeling, what inspired you to transition into acting with a role in "Jamun ka Darakht"? How did you prepare for this shift?

Thank you! While modeling and commercials share similarities with acting, transitioning to a full-fledged film role in "Jamun ka Darakht" required deeper engagement. I immersed myself in the script and focused on understanding my character's significance to the story. This role resonated with me as it aligned closely with my professional values and my advocacy for women's empowerment. Unlike the typical damsel in distress, my character is decisive and assertive, adept at handling mistreatment.

"While modeling and commercials share similarities with acting, transitioning to a full-fledged film role in 'Jamun ka Darakht' required deeper engagement. This role resonated with me as it aligned closely with my professional values and my advocacy for women's empowerment.”

"Jamun ka Darakht" has earned significant international acclaim, including awards at Cannes. How does it feel to be part of a globally recognized project?

The global recognition, particularly winning Best Social Justice Film at Cannes, was exhilarating and validated the universal appeal of our film, now titled "The Java Plum Tree." It’s been an incredible journey, marking my acting debut with such success. We are excited about representing Pakistan on a global stage. The film is being dubbed in French to engage the local audience at Cannes.

As a seasoned model, how did your experience influence your portrayal in the film?

Modeling is a profession I hold dear; it's been my life! On set, I felt responsible for representing the fashion industry, countering the stigma often associated with modeling, especially in our part of the world. My character's dignified portrayal drew me further into the role.

"The global recognition, particularly winning Best Social Justice Film at Cannes, was exhilarating and validated the universal appeal of our film, now titled 'The Java Plum Tree.' It’s been an incredible journey, marking my acting debut with such success.”

Which themes of "Jamun ka Darakht" resonated with you personally, and how do you think the film will impact audiences?

The saying ‘Art imitates life’ holds true for this film. It touches on universal themes like jealousy, competition, infidelity, and inclusivity. I believe it will foster open discussions among audiences.

Working with an ensemble cast can be enriching. Could you share some memorable moments or lessons learned from your co-stars during filming?

Working alongside a diverse ensemble cast brought a unique energy. I learned from everyone—whether young actors, seasoned veterans, or those just starting. Acting is about reacting, and a focused, cohesive team, guided by our director's vision, contributed greatly to the film’s success.

"My longevity in the industry reassures upcoming models about the viability of their careers. I focus on maintaining a respectful presence, which instills confidence in others.”

Transitioning from modeling to acting can be challenging. What hurdles did you face, and what advice would you give to models considering a similar transition?

Transitioning from modeling to acting seemed natural, as both involve portraying a vision. My advice to models looking to branch out is not to limit themselves to acting; explore other roles within entertainment, like fashion editing or choreography, inspired by the careers of Kate Moss and Tyra Banks.

With success in modeling and now acting, how do you handle the expectations and pressures of evolving publicly?

Being in the limelight brings inherent pressures, whether you're a newcomer or an established figure. I’ve always prioritized honesty and ethics, which guide my work across all platforms.

"I endorse only those brands that I feel I can do justice to. Not everything should be your cup of tea. I have never associated myself with any brand that has an issue with its reputation.”

Throughout your modeling career, which accolade has meant the most to you personally and why?

Receiving the Lux Style Award for Style Icon in 2022 was particularly meaningful. It was the first award in this category, recognizing my personal style, which is a direct reflection of my individual efforts, distinguishing it from collaborative accolades like Best Model.

As a fashion icon, how have you influenced emerging models and the industry at large?

My longevity in the industry reassures upcoming models about the viability of their careers. I focus on maintaining a respectful presence, which instills confidence in others. Ensuring proper working conditions and sharing my experiences also contribute to a healthier industry environment.

What are your goals for the future in fashion, and how do you plan to influence the industry?

I aim to give back to the fashion industry by nurturing new talent and addressing challenges. My involvement in fashion documentaries and philanthropic shows underscores my commitment to elevating industry standards.

"Keeping realistic expectations, I’m open to opportunities that align with my values. I prefer roles that portray strong, empowering characters, steering clear of stereotypical portrayals.”

What are your aspirations in film? Are there specific roles or genres you are eager to explore?

Keeping realistic expectations, I’m open to opportunities that align with my values. I prefer roles that portray strong, empowering characters, steering clear of stereotypical portrayals.

Finally, what message do you wish to convey through your work in modeling and film?

I want to highlight the hard work behind the glamour of the entertainment industry. The extensive preparation, long hours, and dedication involved deserve recognition and appreciation.
