Reema Lagoo's Most Memorable Roles As On-Screen Mom To Bollywood's Biggest Stars

Veteran Indian actor Reema Lagoo, celebrated for her performances in movies like Kal Ho Na Ho, Hum Saath Saath Hain, passed away early on Thursday morning after reportedly suffering from cardiac arrest. She was 59. 

According to reports, Reema had complained of chest pain on Wednesday night and was rushed to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital in Andheri, Mumbai where she passed away.

The hospital's Executive Director Ram Naraian said,

“We will issue a health report later in the day, after consulting with her family.”

According to her son-in-law,

“She was complaining of chest pain so we took her to hospital around 1 am. She passed away due to a heart attack around 3.15 am. She was perfectly fine and had no health issues...so it is really shocking for all us that she is no more with us.”

The actor was popularly known for playing mother to protagonists in Bollywood movies like Hum Saath Saath Hain and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and also has a memorable TV series to her credit, the iconic Tu Tu Main Main.

Her acting career spread over four decades and she received four Filmfare Awards for best supporting actress. She was currently shooting a TV show Naamkaran by Mahesh Bhatt, in which unlike her usual roles she starred in a negative role for one of the first times.

Maine Pyar Kiya:



Lagoo played Salman Khan's traditional yet nurturing mom. She supported her son's love for the girl despite the pressure from her husband to not let them end up together.

Hum Aapke Hain Kaun



Here, she played mom to Madhuri Dixit and Renuka Shahane. She raised them to be the perfect, charming/sweet daughters who kept the family knit. Reema also portrayed a caring mother-in-law and an equally involved wife and was adored by everyone as the beautiful 'mother of the bride.'

Hum Saath Saath Hain



Lagoo played mom to Mohnish Bahl, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Neelam. She was the modern, new-age mom mom who is torn between her step-son and her biological child - a character that is surely difficult to play on screen but she nailed it!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai



In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Lagoo played a loving and caring mother to Kajol. While she wanted her daughter to get married to Salman Khan’s character, she knew in her heart that Kajol was not happy with the choices she has made.

Kal Ho Naa Ho



Lagoo played the role of a strong, composed and elegant mother going through the hardest thing a mom could go through - watching her son die. She came to terms with it as gracefully as she could.
