The Grand Palais in Paris was transformed into #VillaChanel for this show. An 18th century garden, inspired by Karl Lagerfeld's favorite time period, a beach with real sand, lifeguards, palm trees and grand double staircase that led to an abnormally neat lawn and a giant pool at the center- the setup for the collection was mind blowing. Irony, how it was actually snowing outside the Grand Palais.
The collection was inspired by the luxury textiles of 18th century and the precise tailoring of the 1980s. The Victorian era gowns were adorned with dried flowers and hand-painted sequins. The theme included bubble hem dresses, kitten-heels, sharp, puffy shoulders, ruffle trims and feathers. The colour palette for the season was pastel shades from bubblegum pink, light blue, mint green to pastel yellow.
The models were glammed up in dramatic smokey eyes, bright red lips, and yet again opted for an 80's-punk vibe with towering, unusual hairdos.
With all couture shows, Chanel traditionally ends each couture collection with a bridal look. This time model Vittoria Ceretti wore an embroidered bathing suit instead as a summer take on Haute Couture wedding dress. Supremely luxurious and extravagant, the piece embodied the essence of Haute Couture.
Lagerfeld himself accompanies the "bride" at the end of her walk but this year, he was nowhere in sight. Instead, Lagerfeld's right hand, Virginie Viard, took the bow instead. This left many in confusion about Lagerfeld's whereabouts. It was later said "For the traditional greeting at the end of the show, Mr Lagerfeld, artistic director of Chanel, who was feeling tired, asked Virginie Viard, director of the creative studio of the house, to represent him and greet the guests alongside the bride,” the brand said in a statement to WWD.
