Heading into the movie, I really did not know what to expect. I only knew it was about three hours long and that did not resonate well with me, as I am rarely able to sit through such long films. But this film for me was an exception- as it seemed to pass by very quickly. With my eyes glued onto the screen and with a bag of caramel popcorn in my hands, I have to admit that I enjoyed each and every minute of it- each scene packed with emotion- giving the audience a mix of emotions- happy and sad.

I would classify Secret Superstar as an emotionally loaded movie with an epic storyline. A story based on a young Indian girl with great talent for singing and all the barriers that she faces against her strict and abusive father letting her talent flourish into more than shower-singing.

The film touches on the topic of marital abuse, as the father is abusive towards his wife and daughter, but also shows the unbreakable bond between mother and daughter, who stand as a united front against the father. I loved watching the bond between the mother and daughter, who are portrayed as best friends- always helping each other through the day to day hardships. My favourite song in the film was the song Meri Pyari Ami, which reminds us of any mother figure who loves unconditionally and is a pillar of strength.

The movie had me in tears in the vivid depiction of abuse at home, but a few seconds later, had me smiling and feeling warm from the inside at the endearing bond of friendship between friends, intense love and care between siblings and in retrospect it showed love for strangers, which is where the fabulous Amir Khan comes in.

I really enjoyed Amir Khan's parts in the film, as he added a light humorous touch to such an emotionally loaded movie. His part in the film also brought about a sense of hope and belief in talent. The message in the film was a very powerful one regarding talent and about how truly talented people should always build on their talent and dreams and always fight for them no matter how it is. Another part of the movie that stuck by me was the music- I thoroughly enjoyed each song in the film and the flavour that it gave the film.

Another strong message it gives us is the message about mothers: always trust your mother and have blind faith in her. She may not always be right, but she will always try and do what she feels is best for you and has sacrificed more than you can ever imagine.

Overall, I would give this movie a 10/10. The music, storyline and message were all powerfully conveyed to the audience.

Let's put it this way - If a movie can make you cry and make you laugh at loud at the same time, it is worth every minute of your time.
