Fashion’s coming over all ladylike, but dressing feminine is a tricky balancing act. A too-large bow or an ultra-frilly top can make an otherwise chic look appear as sophisticated as a child on Easter morning.

Here are three ways to master the art of modern femininity, and look powerful, not prissy.

Take a Bow

Arguably the most sophisticated fashion trend to hit the Fall 2016 runway, pussy bow necklines were prominently featured on blouses and flowing dresses. Along with giving a schoolgirl and Victorian allure, pussy bow necklines also provide a heavy dose of modesty. This feminine detail was spotted in abundance at Marc Jacobs and Temperley London, while Kendall Jenner’s monochrome shirt by Thai brand CPS Chaps is the perfect combination of masculine tailoring with a feminine twist.

Pretty Pleats

One of fall’s most wearable trends, There’s nothing more ladylike than a dress or top featuring delicate pleats. While they may not be desk-job friendly, when snapped moving they have a insta-worthy three-dimensional quality that a pencil skirt simply can’t compete against! Gucci’s Alessandro Michele has paved the wave for a brave new world of skirts; check out Alexa Chung’s metallic pleated midi paired with a slouchy jumper. It’s a look that launched a thousand blog posts. Beyoncé also showcased her fashion mettle in the opening outfit for Formation by wearing a monogrammed knife pleated skirt and shirt by (you guessed it!) Gucci. What more reason can you need to bring this piece into your wardrobe?

All in the Details

As always, embroidery, lace and embellishments are a vital part of the fall/winter 2016-2017 collections. Designers such as Anya Hindmarch have upped the cool factor in cozy sweaters by adding artful embellishments including flyaway threads and oversize cording. At Mulberry, exquisite lace dresses were toughened with leather jackets, and shiny studs adding to the swishing effects of the skirts, making the pieces even more special to own.
